Starting your own art collection can be a little daunting, but it shouldn't be! Buying your first original piece should be a fun and exciting experience. However, if you need a little help and advice from an artist, here are a few simple tips to get you started.

 

1. Find your style of art

Art has the power to transform a room and add character to your home. But before you start your collection, it's important to know what you like. Don't be swayed by what your favourite celebrity is buying. Instead, think about the kind of artwork that you want to hang in your home. What emotions do you want it to evoke? What do you want it to represent?

The most important thing is to choose art that you love. After all, you'll be looking at it every day. So pick something that makes you smile, something that draws you in and makes you feel connected.

Tips:

• Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles. Art is about how it makes you feel. If a painting of a house and another painting of a cockroach makes you feel good, then hang them both! 
  Your home, your rules!

• Also, you don’t necessarily need to match your artwork to the rooms colour scheme. Sometimes taking that risk and being bold actually pays off! Exhibit A ⬇️⬇️⬇️

2. Frame your art

Once you have selected the art that you love, consider framing it. Framing will not only enhance the beauty of your art but it will help to protect it from damage. The type of frame you choose will depend on the style of your art and your personal preferences.

Tips:

• Only certain styles of framing will work for your artwork. Go to your local framers and take time out to try out different frames - this will be a fun process…enjoy the moment! 

3. Experiment trying out your artwork in different rooms.

You may have chosen a piece with a particular place in mind and it absolutely could work out perfect. However, don’t feel discouraged if it doesn’t look good in the spot that you had in mind. Move it around and try out different places - it’s all apart of the process. 

Tips:

• Large pieces look great as focal points. Try spaces that are bare, above fireplaces, above sofas, hallways or even down the stairs.

 

4. A pocket friendly option  

Now, I’m being completely bias in saying that original paintings are better than prints because I don’t do prints - I like the exclusiveness of originals. HOWEVER for the sake of being fair…buying a limited edition, original print, is a great way of starting your collection. It’s a much more affordable way of buying original art if you’re on a smaller budget and the fact that they’re limited means they’re kind of “exclusive” - more than a reproduction print anyway.

5. Another pocket friendly solution - Pay in installments

Whatever your budget is, buying your first piece of art or adding to your collection can be made more accessible and affordable by using payment plans.
