Creative Block

Creative Block

What is Creative block and how do I get out of it?

Creative Block is a term for when your creative ideas have run dry. Imagine a door in front of you. Now imagine there’s a big fat padlock on that door. Behind that door is all of your creative ideas, swirling around in a cloud of glitter dying to be used. HOWEVER, there’s one problem. You don’t have the key to unlock the padlock and access your ideas. *Poof* Disappeared!

That is what a creative block is, when you cannot access your creativity and you feel as though you‘ve run out of things to draw.

So how do you get out of this funk?

Well, my first suggestion would be to take a break. Stop pressuring yourself! Creative block usually occurs when you’re exhausted, mentally / physically. Which makes complete sense because I’ve felt like that all week and trying to paint felt like a chore…a chore that didn’t make no sense doing because I was making even more of a mess! So now I’ve stopped!

You should only create when you’re enjoying it otherwise it becomes a task rather than fun. However, if you’re really keen on speeding up the process, here are some things you could try:

  • Buy a new sketch book and create whatever comes to mind. It’s for your eyes only so do whatever you want!
  • Recreate old pieces of yours. See how much much you’ve improved! Who doesn’t love a progress pic!
  • Find an art challenge to participate in. You can find plenty of these on Instagram.
  • Try a new material. EXPERIMENT. There are no rules in creating!
  • Take a look at other artists work. I like to watch YouTube videos to find inspiration.
  • Use bright colours - it will uplift your mood.

Now, I’m off to go take my own advice!

I’ve actually ordered some new material this week. I thought it would be nice to take a break from paints and try different materials like markers, charcoal and pencils. Hopefully if they come soon I can create something over the weekend and share it with you on my next blog…whenever that is 🙃

To conclude, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It will pass!
